4 Reasons Personal Development Techniques Don't Work

4 Reasons Personal Development Techniques Don’t Work

You may have read plenty of personal development books and tried lots of techniques — just like millions of other people. But afterwards, did you really achieve the profound changes and successes those glossy promises described?

If not, don’t worry — millions of people are in the same boat. There are four main reasons personal development techniques don’t work:

Reason 1: Affirmations Alone Mean Nothing

Affirmations like “I am wealthy,” “I am heading towards success” or “I’m happy in my relationship” are lovely, but on their own they don’t work. Why? Let me explain with an example. Your hair is black and you want to dye it blonde. Can you dye it blonde straight away, or do you need to lighten it first?

4 Reasons Personal Development Techniques Don't Work

Exactly — you need to lighten it first. Affirmations work the same way. To change the beliefs and thought patterns you’ve held until now, you first need to remove what created them. If you have fears or reservations, you need to overcome them. Without doing that, your subconscious will reject your affirmations with a firm “Oh, come off it!” Worse still, every time you say “I am successful,” your subconscious will remind you how unsuccessful you feel — dragging your mood and your belief in yourself down even further.

Reason 2: The Universe Isn’t a Pizza Place That Takes Orders

The successes you achieve in life are the result of your character, your personality, your work and your determination. If you’ve become the kind of person who can achieve something, you’ll achieve it. If you haven’t, simply wanting it — or acting as if you were that person — won’t make you successful. The universe isn’t a pizza place; it doesn’t take orders. You get what matches who you are. It’s about becoming someone who can have more. When you’re ready for more, you’ll have more.

Reason 3: Closing Your Eyes and Imagining Something Won’t Make It Happen

Closing your eyes and visualising is a message you send to your own subconscious. It strengthens your belief that you’ll succeed, shifts your energy and builds your self-confidence. But — apart from rare exceptions — it won’t make things fall into your lap without work and effort.

Reason 4: No Technique Can Help Until You Understand the Cause of Your Problem

Behind your current mental codes and behaviour patterns there is always a reason, because nothing appears without one. At some point, that thought pattern and behaviour definitely served you. If you want to change something, you first have to understand it, identify the reasons beneath it, face them — and then change them. That’s when the energy shifts and the universe opens its doors to you.

So What Should You Do?

1. Find out what is stopping you from changing — and face it. Remove that obstacle by asking yourself questions. The most practical way is to take a pen and paper, ask yourself questions and write down the answers. Even if it feels hard at first, you may be surprised by how much you discover about yourself over time.

2. Focus on the area where you want to make the most progress — happiness, work, love life and so on — and develop yourself there. Whatever you focus on grows. As your capacity increases, the situations and people you encounter will change too.

You can do all of this on your own with a bit of effort — or with the support of a professional you trust.

But whatever you do, please don’t abandon your common sense and reason.

Don’t let anyone fool you.

Because “Personal development isn’t the art of daydreaming — it’s the art of making your dreams come true!”
