Transforming Your Emotions

Transforming Your Emotions

How would you like to go from feeling bad to suddenly feeling good?

It may sound like hocus-pocus, but we all have this power within us. The chances of coming across what I’m about to share anywhere else are very, very slim — so I recommend reading this carefully and bookmarking it so you can come back to it again and again.

Look closely at the word “emotion” and you’ll find “motion” inside it. In other words, all our emotions are in motion, just like clouds. They come, and they go…

No emotion — none at all — can last forever.

There are two ways to change any negative emotion you feel:

  1. Transform it into a more positive emotion
  2. Neutralise it and let it dissolve

Method 1: Transform the Emotion

When you feel a negative emotion, the first thing to do is understand the physical reactions it creates in you. Ask yourself:

– What does this feeling feel like? What reactions does it create in my body? How does it affect my circulation and my heartbeat?

Once you’ve found the answer, ask yourself:

– When else do I feel similar physical reactions? Which positive emotions create sensations close to these?

Most negative emotions have a positive counterpart. Anger and excitement, for example, produce the same physical reactions. In both, your heart races. Blood rushes to your head. Your body temperature rises, and you feel an energy inside you that wants to burst out.

The same goes for sadness and peace — they share similar bodily reactions. The moment you notice this, imagine you’re experiencing the positive version of the emotion right now. Within just a few seconds, you’ll notice your feelings starting to change.

For example, when you’re furious and can’t discharge that anger, the moment you realise the feeling is physically the same as excitement, your energy suddenly turns into enthusiasm. A few minutes ago you were wondering how to let off your anger; a few minutes later, you won’t know where to put all that excitement and joy.

Method 2: Neutralise the Emotion

If you struggle to find a positive counterpart for a negative emotion, you can choose to neutralise it instead of transforming it.

To neutralise an emotion, close your eyes. Watch your physical reactions with full attention. Listen to every reaction in your body. Observe them as if you were an outsider, without judging any of your feelings. Do this for at least ten minutes without a break, and you’ll be amazed to see the emotional intensity gradually fade — and the feelings that were crushing you a moment ago simply pass.
